Physical Therapy Schools in Washington

Physical Therapy Schools in Washington

The physical therapy field is growing. It offers many opportunities for assistants and professional Physical Therapists, and physical therapy schools in Washington include undergraduate and graduate level programs to prepare individuals for either role in the physical therapy field.

CAPTE Accreditation

Some states offer few accredited physical therapy programs, but students in the State of Washington have several options for completing their formal education with a CAPTE accredited school. CAPTE is the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education and is responsible for making sure that undergraduate and graduate programs are adequately preparing individuals to work in physical therapy. Holding a degree from a CAPTE accredited program is required for taking the licensing examination for Physical Therapists or for becoming certified as a physical therapy assistant.

Program Options

There are three physical therapy schools in Washington that offer graduate level programs, resulting in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). A master’s degree is the minimum requirement for working as a licensed Physical Therapist, but most schools have begun offering a doctorate at the graduate level in order to keep up with changes in the employment market.

As the field has become increasingly competitive, more and more employers now seek candidates with a doctorate degree rather than a master’s. The schools for physical therapy in Washington provide the appropriate education for producing competitive candidates.

There are additionally six physical therapy schools in Washington to choose from for completing a physical therapy assistant degree and all are two year programs resulting in an associate of science, though there are some subtle differences in the degrees conferred at the various schools.

Physical Therapy Schools in Washington – DPT Programs

The three physical therapy schools in Washington all offer entry level DPT programs that are three to four years in length. These schools include: Eastern Washington University, the University of Puget Sound, and the University of Washington.

Physical Therapy Assistant Programs

Of the six CAPTE accredited physical therapy schools in Washington for completing an associate’s degree, most offer an Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapy, including:  Green River Community College, Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Olympic College, and Spokane Falls Community College. The other two schools offer associate degrees as well, but the degree conferred is different. Pima Medical Institute offers an Associate of Occupational Science and Whatcom Community College confers an Associate of Science degree.
