Physical Therapy Schools in PA

Finding an accredited physical therapy program in some states is a little challenging and there may only be one or two options available in some locations. Accredited physical therapy schools in PA are quite abundant on the other hand, making it easy for students who wish to pursue a career in physical therapy to have numerous choices available for their undergraduate and graduate physical therapy education. Whether you are just starting out in your post secondary education or are ready to choose a physical therapy graduate program, the physical therapy schools in PA will offer plenty of options.

Preparation for a Career in Physical Therapy

Until recently Physical Therapists have generally only been required to have a Bachelor’s degree in order to work in the field. A graduate degree is now the minimum requirement for clinical practice in the field of physical therapy medicine – either a Master’s of Physical Therapy (MPT) or a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

Physical Therapists already actively working in the field of physical therapy medicine are, as yet, not required to return to school to complete a Doctorate degree; however, many employers now require a minimum of a DPT for consideration. This has resulted in most graduate programs transitioning to the Doctorate level and many practicing Physical Therapists who hold only a Master’s returning to school to complete a Doctorate degree program.

In response to the returning student’s need for a specialized degree program, many physical therapy schools in PA and around the nation have developed transitional programs for Master’s students pursuing a doctorate degree. In other words, these practicing Physical Therapists are able to achieve a Doctorate degree in less time and in more targeted programs designed to meet their specific needs.

Prerequisites for Entering Physical Therapy Schools In PA

While students with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree can work as physical therapy assistants, a graduate level education is required to work as a fully credentialed Physical Therapist. This, of course, means that students will need to gain admittance to a graduate level program. Most of these programs require either a Bachelor of Science degree or at least three years of undergraduate education, with a heavy concentration in the physical sciences, as a prerequisite. Additionally, most physical therapy schools in Pennsylvania also require a minimum GPA of between 2.5 and 3.0. Student transcripts should include all of the general studies courses necessary for a well rounded education, as well as numerous courses in the physical and health sciences, including biology, anatomy, and physiology.

Physical Therapy Schools in PA

Pennsylvania is home to a broad selection of colleges and universities offering undergraduate preparatory programs for those interested in eventually being admitted to a DPT program. There are also a couple of schools that still offer Master’s of Physical Therapy (MPT) or Master’s of Science of Physical Therapy (MSPT). DPT programs are plentiful in Pennsylvania, affording students more choices for their graduate level education than is available in many other states. Transitional programs for practicing Physical Therapists returning for their DPT are also widely available from physical therapy schools in Pennsylvania.
