Physical Therapy Schools in Oklahoma

If you’ve settled on physical therapy as you’re career of choice, then you’ll no doubt be interested in learning more about the educational requirements for becoming licensed to practice physical therapy, as well as finding out more about the different physical therapy schools in Oklahoma capable of preparing you to work in your chosen field.

Oklahoma School Options

Some states have several colleges and universities from which to choose when selecting an institution to prepare you for a career in physical therapy. Oklahoma is a state in which school choices are more limited, with there being only two universities that have been properly accredited to teach students who wish to become Physical Therapists. The two schools available are Langston University in Langston, OK and the University of Oklahoma, which actually offers two locations in which to study physical therapy – you can attend OU Physical Therapy Schools in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Significance of Accreditation

In the United States, there is one primary authority responsible for reviewing and approving the curriculum of Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist assistant programs – the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Completing your education at a CAPTE program is an essential part of qualifying to sit for the national licensing exam and becoming a registered Physical Therapist (master’s degree) or Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) in all fifty states. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that you select a school that holds current CAPTE. The physical therapy schools in Oklahoma listed here hold that distinction.

Langston University

Among the three options for physical therapy schools in Oklahoma is Langston University, located in Langston, OK, a rural community about sixty miles south of Oklahoma city. While the campus is more remote, it still offers plentiful opportunities for students to participate in social, civic, athletic and other traditional college activities.

Langston is a historically black college which offers a three year graduate level DPT program. Langston has the established goal of increasing the number of minorities in the physical therapy field, and promoting a commitment to caring for the underserved minority populations. There are about fourteen students accepted to the program each year and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required, as well as a 2.5 GPA in prerequisite courses.

Forty weeks of full time clinical internships are required at Langston’s DPT program and experiences are offered throughout Oklahoma and the neighboring states. Students must complete stints in physical therapy management programs caring for patients with musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular and integumentary impairments. Clinical experiences are also offered in specialized areas, including geriatrics and pediatrics.

The University of Oklahoma

There are two physical therapy schools in Oklahoma offered by the University of Oklahoma – one in Tulsa at the Schusterman Center and one in Oklahoma City at the Health Sciences center. Both locations offer an entry level and a transitional DPT program and both of these programs are three years in duration.

About twenty eight students are accepted to each of these physical therapy schools in Oklahoma each year, for a total of fifty six new students annually and a maximum of one hundred and sixty eight in all physical therapy graduate programs at both locations at any given time. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for consideration. Post-professional DPT students may apply to the University of Oklahoma with different admission requirements, including the use of professional experience for potential credit toward the completion of their doctorate requirements.

Clinical internships and practicum at both University of Oklahoma locations consist of thirty weeks of full time clinicals, spread out across all three years of the program. Most clinical experiences occur within Oklahoma physical therapy facilities, including private practices, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers, residential care facilities and hospital physical therapy departments.
