Physical Therapy Schools in Hawaii

If you’re thinking of entering the field of physical therapy, the first step is to complete a bachelor’s degree program with an accredited college or university. While the minimum education required for becoming licensed as a Physical Therapist is a master’s degree, you must first hold a bachelor’s degree prior to applying for a physical therapy graduate program.

The physical therapy schools in Hawaii offer several programs to satisfy this prerequisite for gaining admittance to a Master’s or Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program.

Options in Hawaii

Hawaii, like many states, does not have a large selection of graduate level programs for physical therapy. Unfortunately, this means that many students will need to go out of state to complete their master’s or doctorate degree. There is, however, the option of enrolling in an accredited online program for helping complete their graduate degree. The increase in distance-learning programs from accredited schools makes this a more viable option for physical therapy students in Hawaii than ever before.

Choosing a PT School in Hawaii

In choosing an undergrad program in Hawaii you should be sure that you select one that is specifically designed to prepare you for entrance into a DPT program. This will give you an advantage and make it more likely you’ll gain admittance to any program to which you apply.

CAPTE Accreditation

To become licensed as a Physical Therapist, you must hold a minimum of a master’s degree from a college or university that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). This same organization is also responsible for accrediting associate and bachelor’s degree programs for physical therapy assistants as well.

Though the school is conveniently located in Honolulu, with ample parking and easy access to public transportation, the campus is situated on the slopes of the Diamond Head Crater and just minutes from the beach.

The University of Hawaii’s Manoa campus, located in Honolulu, is in the process of becoming accredited to offer a DPT program. In the mean time, the college does offer a pre-physical therapy program to prepare students for entering graduate school. This program falls under the pre-health umbrella at the Manoa campus.
