Physical Therapy Schools in Colorado

The role of the physical therapist is that of any other medical practitioner – to heal, alleviate pain and increase the overall quality of life for his or her patients. It is a rewarding position and one that may be very attractive to you personally as well as professionally.

There are two physical therapy schools in Colorado specifically designed to prepare you to practice physical therapy medicine: Regis University in Denver and the University of Colorado Denver, which is actually located on the Aurora, CO campus.

Graduate Programs and Accreditation

To work as a physical therapist, you must obtain a minimum of a Master’s Degree, but most are now completing a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). Either degree must be completed with a graduate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Both the Regis University and the University of Colorado Denver – Aurora programs are CAPTE accredited. Both of the physical therapy schools in Colorado offer beautiful surroundings.

Regis University

Located in Denver, Regis University affords students many opportunities for dynamic clinical internship venues, as well as plentiful social engagement options and living accommodations. The physical therapy schools in Colorado expect students of varying interest and experience levels to enroll as well, which is the reason that Regis University offers four programs for those who wish to pursue a professional career in the field of physical therapy, including an entry level DPT, transitional DPT, a Manual Therapy Fellowship and an Optimal Aging Fellowship.

Regis Entry Level DPT

The entry level DPT program at Regis University admits about 64 students each year and requires a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) in undergraduate studies of 2.75, though a minimum of a C- must be earned in all DPT prerequisite courses. While these are the minimum requirements for application, it’s important to keep in mind that the average overall and prerequisite-specific GPAs of those students accepted to the program rate closer to 3.4%.
This Doctorate program is three years in length and includes a total of 38 weeks of clinical internships. Those clinical internships which occur early in the DPT program are held at Denver clinics, hospitals and physical therapy offices. Those occurring later in the program are often outside the city and at least one is required to take place outside of Colorado, providing students a more diverse and beneficial composite of PT practice.

University of Colorado Denver – Aurora

The DPT program of the University of Colorado (CU) is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. Aurora, as part of the metro-Denver area, is a diverse city offering much in the way of social and cultural attractions, as well as numerous options for student living arrangements on and around the Medical Campus.

CU Graduate Program

The CU graduate program is three years in length and includes 44 weeks of full time clinical education in addition to 10 weeks of fieldwork in an individually chosen, specialized field of PT medicine. To gain admittance to the CU master’s program, you must have a minimum overall and prerequisite GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The CU PT program is affiliated with more than three hundred different clinical venues, including sites within the Denver metropolitan area, throughout the state of Colorado, across the U.S., and even several clinics and other PT practices in international locations, providing students the most well-rounded and extensive clinical education available from the physical therapy schools in Colorado.

Physical Therapy Schools In Colorado Require Internships…

Students who wish to pursue the DPT program at CU should realize that clinical internships must include at least one stint in a more rural or “underserved” community. Opportunities for clinical experiences are so vast with the CU DPT program that students are often able to increase their specialization in the field of PT medicine and impress prospective employers in the process, with most students fielding several employment offers even prior to graduation.
