Langston is a historically black college which offers a three year graduate level DPT program. Langston has the established goal of increasing the number of minorities in the physical therapy field, and promoting a commitment to caring for the underserved minority populations. There are about fourteen students accepted to the program each year and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required, as well as a 2.5 GPA in prerequisite courses.

Forty weeks of full time clinical internships are required at Langston’s DPT program and experiences are offered throughout Oklahoma and the neighboring states. Students must complete stints in physical therapy management programs caring for patients with musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular and integumentary impairments. Clinical experiences are also offered in specialized areas, including geriatrics and pediatrics.

The University of Oklahoma

There are two physical therapy schools in Oklahoma offered by the University of Oklahoma – one in Tulsa at the Schusterman Center and one in Oklahoma City at the Health Sciences center. Both locations offer an entry level and a transitional DPT program and both of these programs are three years in duration.

About twenty eight students are accepted to each of these physical therapy schools in Oklahoma each year, for a total of fifty six new students annually and a maximum of one hundred and sixty eight in all physical therapy graduate programs at both locations at any given time. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for consideration. Post-professional DPT students may apply to the University of Oklahoma with different admission requirements, including the use of professional experience for potential credit toward the completion of their doctorate requirements.

Clinical internships and practicum at both University of Oklahoma locations consist of thirty weeks of full time clinicals, spread out across all three years of the program. Most clinical experiences occur within Oklahoma physical therapy facilities, including private practices, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers, residential care facilities and hospital physical therapy departments.

Bellarmine University

Bellarmine University offers a three year graduate DPT program during which students must complete 145 credit hours. It is a competitive program where only about 15% of qualified applicants are accepted. Bellarmine Clinicals

Clinical experiences in this program are robust too, with internships and practicum occurring throughout all three years of the program. During the first year, students participate in weekly clinicals each Friday. In the second year, students complete a six week, full time internship. During the final year of the program, students complete three consecutive, full time, twelve week clinical internships in three different locations, and immersing students in their work environments. Clinical sites include local, regional and national facilities, including acute care locations, rehabilitation and community-based locales. Specialty clinical experiences are also available.

University of Kentucky

There are two physical therapy schools in Kentucky offered by the University of Kentucky, including one at the main campus in Lexington and a satellite program in Hazard. Each program is a three year, graduate level curriculum that requires the completion of 120 credit hours, including both classroom study and clinical rotations. In order to gain admission to either program, students must have a C grade point average and about 47% of qualified applicants are admitted. There are about 48 students admitted each year in Lexington and about 16 annually in Hazard.

Clinicals at the University of Kentucky

Students must complete 37 weeks of clinical internships at either of these physical therapy schools in Kentucky. Students spend the first year of the program involved in classroom studies and labs. During the second year, clinical experiences begin. The first clinical is one week in length. The second is four weeks of full time assignment. The third is a six week, full time internship.

During the final year of the program, students complete a total of 28 weeks of clinicals, including two full time, eight week rotations and one full time, ten week internship. Clinical experiences are required in rehabilitation, acute care and outpatient facilities and specialized internships are also available.

Each of these schools offers an entry level DPT degree program, and three of them also offer a combined bachelors and graduate degree program.

Boston University

The DPT programs at Boston University include an entry level post Bachelor’s Degree as well as a combined BS/DPT. The combined program consists of six years of classroom and clinical studies, including 42 weeks of clinical internships, while the DPT program is three years in length and also requires 42 weeks of clinical internships to complete. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Approximately 60 students are admitted to the program per year, including both undergrad and grad students.

MGH Institute of Health Professions

The MGH Institute admits between 45 and 60 students each year, with only about 25% of those who apply being accepted to the program. Of all the physical therapy schools in Massachusetts, MGH is one of the four that offer only a graduate level DPT program, requiring that students already hold a bachelor’s degree before applying. The program lasts for three years and includes 40 plus weeks of clinical internships as well as weekly practicum and one paid, full-time clinical rotation.

Northeastern University

Perhaps the most competitive of the physical therapy schools in Massachusetts, Northeastern University enrolls about 100 freshmen in its combined BS/DPT program each year, and another 25 students in its graduate level DPT program. Only about 85% of those who are accepted into the programs end up graduating. The combined BS/DPT is a six year program and the DPT is a four year plan. Both require the completion of 30 or more weeks of clinical internships and rotations to complete.

Simmons College

Simmons College in Boston is among the four physical therapy schools in Massachusetts offering only a graduate level DPT. The program is three years in lengths and includes between six and twelve months of full-time clinical internship assignments. About 25 students are admitted each year and a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for application.

Physical Therapy Schools in Massachusetts – Springfield Area

Springfield is home to two of the physical therapy schools in Massachusetts that are accredited by CAPTE – one offering a combined BS/DPT and the other featuring only a graduate level DPT program.

American International College

Also among the physical therapy schools in Massachusetts offering only a master’s level education, American International College in Springfield accepts between 30 and 35 students a year and requires a 3.2 GPA. Students finish their studies in three years and complete 36 weeks of clinical rotations in the process.

Springfield College

Springfield College offers a combined undergraduate and graduate level physical therapy program and also accepts students who already hold a bachelor’s degree into a graduate DPT program as well. The combined degree takes six years to finish, while the graduate DPT program is three years in length. Both require 30 weeks of clinical internships and a minimum GPA of 3.5 for admittance. Competition is high with only 36 to 45 students accepted per year from a total of about 400 applicants.

Lowell

The University of Massachusetts has a campus in Lowell which is the home of the school’s DPT program. This program is for grad students and last three years, including 35 weeks of clinical experiences. About 30 students are admitted each year and a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for consideration.
